Northern Health has recently hired a full-time nurse, which opened up the position for a back-fill part time nurse

In the story “New doctor for the Houston Health Centre” published in the Houston Today Jan. 25 issue, it was reported at theDistrict of Houston council meeting that in march another new doctor would be coming, and that Northern Health has recently hired a full-time nurse, which opened up the position for a back-fill part time nurse to which a resident of Houston that grew up in the community became the successful recipient of.

Brennan McKone, the new back-fill part time nurse at the Houston Health Centre, and a 2010 graduate of Houston SecondarySchool, studied a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George.

“Growing up, I was intrigued by cuts and wounds and was always the first one to take out slivers from family members. My fascination of the human anatomy and innate desire to help people continued to grow, and a career in nursing seemed fitting,” said McKone.

In her third year of the program, McKone said she was fortunate enough to complete a practicum at the Houston HealthCentre.

McKone earned her Registered Nurse First Call certificate during her fourth year of study, and accepted a position as a casual registered nurse at the Houston Health Centre in September 2015.

“Here [at the Houston Health Centre], I am able to utilize my wider range of skills. I really enjoy the constant challenges and staying up to date with the most current evidence-based practices,” said McKone.

Mckone says she has found it extremely rewarding to return to her hometown to care for the people she grew up with while giving back to the community, and seems to be excited to continue her interest in nursing here in Houston.
