New online recycling directory to help residents reduce waste

The City of Campbell River has launched a new tool to make recycling easier

The City of Campbell River has launched a new tool to make recycling easier.

The online community recycling directory (www.campbellriverrecycles.ca) details where residents and businesses can recycle more than what can be picked up at curbside. The directory provides online maps to indicate where to return a range of items such as medication, hazardous material and appliances that may otherwise end up in the landfill.

“We are hoping the online directory will make it that much easier for people to recycle items because this tool is available all day every day to provide the community with additional options to complement the City’s weekly recycling collection, the weekly eight-month yard waste collection and the yard waste drop-off centre,” says Amber Zirnhelt, the City’s sustainability manager.  In 2010, the average Campbell River household disposed of 456 kilograms of garbage through curbside collection, much of which could have been recycled or composted. With the landfill expected to be full by 2012, the City is providing resources like the recycling directory to help residents divert material from the landfill.

“With the landfill nearly full, we need to all work together to ensure items that can be recycled or donated are directed to the proper location,” adds Mayor Charlie Cornfield. “With everyone’s help, we can significantly reduce Campbell River’s waste.”
