New president for B.C. Fruit Growers Association

Vernon's Jeet Dukhia loses position to Kelowna's Fred Steele

Kelowna orchardist Fred Stele was elected president of the B.C. Fruit Growers Association Saturday.

Kelowna orchardist Fred Stele was elected president of the B.C. Fruit Growers Association Saturday.

A Vernon area resident is no longer the head of the B.C. Fruit Growers Association.

Jeet Dukhia, who had been president for 18 months, came in second to Kelowna’s Fred Steele during an election at the BCFGA convention in Kelowna Saturday.

Steele is a former vice-president of the association, which represents tree fruit growers in the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys.

During a recent interview, Steele called for a strategic plan for the industry.

“Without a plan or a vision, if you go to government and say we want to partner with you but we don’t have a plan, that creates problems,” he said.

“We need a new approach and we need a plan beyond simply wanting something.”
