Just in time for the busy summer boating season, the Central Okanagan’s regional rescue program has received a new vessel.
Once training is complete over the next few weeks, the new marine rescue boat will be operated by the Lake Country Fire Department and replace a vessel that has been operating for many years.
“The vessel has a rigid aluminum hull with inflatable collars,” said Bruce Smith, with the Regional District of Central Okanagan.
“A new seating system and configuration incorporates shock absorbers to provide a high level of comfort and safety for those operating the boat. This will help reduce the potential for injuries and provide a safe environment for crew members who are often on the water during extreme conditions answering distress calls.”
The Lake Country boat can reach a top speed of 47 knots and there are provisions for future mounting of a fire pump.
The marine rescue service provides assistance to boaters on Okanagan, Wood and Kalamalka Lake, search and rescue of victims, response to motor vehicle accidents involving vehicles in the water.
It also helps with public safety issues, boaters in distress (emergent situations), above or in water only (no underwater capability), marine evacuation, environmental (spill) response and assessment and safety during public events.
