Winter sports athletes and a longtime community volunteer were honoured Monday for their dedication to the local sports scene.
Speed skater Connie Kapak was named Tim Hortons North Okanagan Athlete of the Year, and was presented with her trophy and keeper plaque at the Okanagan Landing Tim Hortons.
Kapak capped off a year that included winning gold on home ice at the B.C. Winter Games by winning five gold medals at the Western Canadian finals in Winnipeg.
Jim Cotter’s curling quartet was named Team of the Year.
Cotter, backed by third Kevin Folk, second Ty Griffith, lead Rick Sawatzky, and coached by two-time world champion Rick Folk, led his team to a second consecutive provincial men’s title, and a second straight appearance in the Tim Hortons Brier.
Cotter’s rink sits 11th in the World Curling rankings.
Mel Briggeman, well-known for his prowess as a basketball official, and for his longtime service with the Funtastic Sports Society, was honoured with the Leadership in Sport honour.
