A female Mountie discovered sometimes even cops can be caught off guard when she was sucker punched by a woman at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital Monday.
The assault happened at about 3:15 p.m. while the Mountie was at the hospital investigating an unrelated matter. A woman, who had just been released from the hospital, walked up behind the officer, tapped her on the shoulder and punched the officer in the face when she turned around.
The 25-year-old suspect, a resident of Victoria, was arrested by other police officers at the scene and remains in custody.
Nanaimo RCMP have recommended a charge of one count of assault causing bodily harm and the suspect is scheduled to appear in Nanaimo provincial court today (July 9).
The RCMP officer, who has five year of service, was treated for a broken nose and is expected to be off work for an undisclosed period to recover from her injury.
