A woman has died following an altercation in the area of Bute Street and Fifth Avenue early Wednesday (July 15, 2015).
Port Alberni RCMP responded at 1 a.m. to a report of an altercation. Upon arrival, an adult female was found to be in medical distress and was transported to the West Coast General Hospital, Port Alberni RCMP Inspector Mac Richards said.
The female subsequently died as a result of her wounds.
As a result of initial investigation, three people have been arrested in relation to this incident, all of whom remain in custody.
The area around Fifth and Bute was blocked off for several hours as officers gathered evidence, but has now reopened.
“This investigation is in its infancy, but our officers have made solid progress in determining what happened, and identifying those responsible,” Richards said.
“This appears to have been an altercation between a group of individuals known to each other, therefore we do not believe there is any risk to public safety.”
This active investigation is being led by the Port Alberni General Investigation Section, with support from the Forensic Identification Service and general duty officers.
Anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or has information which may be of interest to investigators is asked to contact the Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424 or CrimeStoppers at 1-877-222-TIPS (8477).
