Toronto Lakeshore Patriots scored five unanswered goals to beat the Yorkton Terriers 5-1 in the first game of day two at the RBC Cup national Junior A hockey championship at Kal Tire Place.
Taylor Thompson gave the West region’s top seed, the Saskatchewan League champion Terriers, a 1-0 lead just 1:18 into the contest.
The lead lasted all of 22 seconds before Michael Prapavessie tied things up for the Central champion Patriots.
Rory Bell scored what would prove to be the winning goal at 5:56 of the opening frame.
Andreas Tsogkas, on a power play, and Ryall Ledyard, at even strength, scored to give the Pats a 4-1 lead after 40 minutes.
Kevin Shier’s unassisted power play goal in the third rounded out the scoring.
Toronto goalie Evan Buitenhuis stopped 22 of 23 shots to pick up the win as the Patriots improved to 1-1. Kale Thomson made 27 saves for the Terriers (0-1), who were playing their first game of the tournament.
The second game Sunday evening has the Eastern champion Carleton Place Canadians taking on West 2, the Dauphin Kings, at 7 p.m. Both teams won their opening games Saturday.
