Police were on scene after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle on Saturday night.

A pedestrian is in hospital after being hit by a vehicle on Saturday evening in downtown Abbotsford.

Police said he went into medical distress following the incident.

The 67-year-old man was walking east on McDougall and crossing Montrose Avenue at a crosswalk when he was struck by a pickup truck turning left.

Although there were initial indications that the collision happened at a low speed and wasn’t serious, once the man was taken to hospital for assessment, his condition deteriorated significantly, said Abbotsford Police Department (APD) Const. Ian MacDonald.

After the crash, police shut down roads in the area to investigate the cause.

MacDonald said the driver of the truck remained at the scene and assisted investigators. He said the victim appears to have done nothing wrong, but noted that darkness at the time of the incident, plus dark clothing worn by the pedestrian, may have contributed to the collision.
