A cell phone proved to be a lifesaving piece of equipment for an off-road motorcyclist.

A cell phone proved to be a lifesaving piece of equipment for an off-road motorcyclist who crashed his bike in the hills east Penticton Saturday morning.

At about 10 a.m. on June 11, 911 received a call from a male who had just crashed his cross-country motorcycle in an area above Saliken Drive just off Carmi Road. Due to a number of injuries, he was unable to move other than to make the cell phone call to 911.

Penticton Search and Rescue was contacted, and by 10:30 a.m. had three vehicles with 13 crew on their way to the location. The rider was located at about 11:10 a.m. on a knoll overlooking the city.

The rider was provided with basic medical treatment, packaged in a stretcher and carried off the hill by the SAR team where he was turned over to ambulance personnel for transport to Penticton Regional Hospital. The extent of his injuries is unknown.
