Runners took steps forward in the fight against breast cancer.
The CIBC Run for the Cure was held at locations across Canada on Sunday including the Gyro Youth Sports Fields at Nanaimo’s Beban Park.
The one-kilometre or 5km run/walk is held annually in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Prior to the start of Sunday’s run/walk, there was a breast cancer survivors’ parade set to an original composition performed live by local singer-songwriter Kendall Patrick.
The fundraising total announced at the event was $85,568, and according to fundraising director Sylvia Shedden, the final total will be a bit higher after the last donations are counted.
Steri Beary’s Team won the Corporate Spirit Award, the Kemosabes won the Friends and Family Award, Nanaimo Christian School won the School Team Award, the Abreast of Life dragonboat team won the Women’s Team Challenge Award and Queen Margaret’s School won the Secondary School Challenge Top Team Fundraiser Award.
Individual Determination Awards for top individual fundraisers went to Edna McNabb, Kam Burrows and Janet Mattis.
About 650 people participated in the run/walk, including 32 team entries.
