Business break-in

Central Saanich Police responded to a business alarm at 2:24 a.m. Sept. 24.

The alarm at a business in the 6700 block of Oldfield Road was triggered by a rock which smashed a window.

Police believe the vandals then leaned into the building and stole computer equipment. A police dog was brought in to track the area, but no suspects were located.

A forensic unit was also called in to search for fingerprints. Two hard drive towers, keyboards and monitors were taken. The break and enter is still under investigation.

Hot car

A small vehicle fire was reported Sept. 26 at 7:50 a.m. at the corner of Lochside Drive and Mount Newton X Road.

Smoke was seen coming from the floor of the passenger side of the red Volkswagen Golf that was parked on the street.

Central Saanich volunteer firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze quickly. The fire is believed to have been caused by a heater malfunction. After the fire was put out, the vehicle was towed from the scene.

Sophisticated scammer

A Central Saanich resident received a letter in the mail addressed to them from a company claiming it was trying to hire mystery shoppers.

The letter informed the resident they had been chosen to take a training course for which they would be sent a cheque for $1,500. They were instructed to deduct $150 and return $1,350 to the company via a Western Union account.

“This is a consistent way of doing this (type of scam),” said Central Saanich media liaison Cpl. Janis Jean.

Police advise residents not to correspond with anyone offering a cheque to cash with the return of a portion of the sum.

Jean said the letter appears legitimate, coming from a company calling itself “Platinum Solution” and includes logos of several stores claiming that they are sponsoring the hiring of mystery shoppers.

Ladies get loud

Just after midnight on Sept. 25 a Central Saanich resident heard youth “screaming at the top of their lungs”.

In the call to police the resident could not identify if the sounds were of someone in distress or just causing a ruckus. Police went to the 7100 block of Wallace Drive where they found two inebriated females laying on the sidewalk.

The pair were screaming and giggling. The 19 and 20 year old Central Saanich women were taken to their homes by police and asked to be quiet once inside.

Vehicle vandalized

A driver was surprised to find a rock in the back seat of the car on Sept. 23.

The rock had been thrown through rear window of vehicle which was parked on street in the 7200 block of East Saanich Road. Nothing was stolen from the car and no other damage was reported to the vehicle or in the surrounding area.
