Predator Ridge targets wildfire

The FireSmart committee will hold an event Saturday to clear potential fire fuels

Predator Ridge residents continue to prepare for wildfire.

The FireSmart committee will hold an event Saturday to clear potential fire fuels in the Mashie neighbourhood.

The cleanup follows a recent presentation by Alan Westhaver, one of Canada’s FireSmart experts.

Westhaver spoke to about 90 Predator property owners about his experiences with the wildfires in Kelowna, Slave Lake and Fort McMurray.

According to Westhaver, many of the properties destroyed in those fires were actually ignited by embers.

“Eighty-five to 90 per cent of homes with fire resistant roofs and a managed 10-metre zone around them to FireSmart principles will survive a wildfire,” he said.
