Princeton police warn residents about telephone scammers

Telephone fraudsters are targeting Princeton residents by asking for personal information.

The Princeton RCMP is warning residents to beware of callers pretending to be from reputable companies asking for personal information and money.

People claiming to be from banks or credit card companies are common perpetrators, an RCMP officer said.

Residents should do their own research before giving out personal information.

This includes calling the company back on its actual phone number provided in the phone book or online.

Once victims give their information, fraudsters can access their bank account or credit card and steal money.

It is difficult to track down scammers because their location is hard to determine, the RCMP said.

Often the criminals are from overseas.

But it is still important to report phone fraud to help police keep track of the extent of crime in Princeton.
