RCMP still dealing with drinking drivers

100 Mile House RCMP member and conservation officer take down belligerent drunk

100 Mile RCMP responded to 86 complaints and calls for service during the past week.

Poor decisions

On Sept. 30 at 6:40 a.m., 100 Mile House RCMP conducted a traffic stop with a vehicle parked on Horse Lake Road across from the Lutheran Church.

There was a male seated behind the wheel asleep and the vehicle was running. When he was awoken, he became combative with the officer.

A struggle ensued outside with the vehicle on the side of the road. The man was eventually subdued with the assistance of a Conservation Officer.

The suspect was taken to the 100 Mile District General Hospital for treatment of self-inflicted injuries.

He was determined to be impaired by alcohol. When he was released from hospital, he was taken to the 100 Mile House RCMP Detachment where he refused to provide a breath sample.

The suspect was also on conditions not to consume liquor.

When his vehicle was searched, a cell phone was recovered that was reported stolen from the Lutheran Church the same morning. The 24-year-old 100 Mile resident is facing several charges, including assaulting a police officer, care and control while impaired, refusing a breath demand, possession of stolen property under $5000, and two counts of breaching an undertaking.

The investigation into the break-in to the Lutheran Church is continuing.

There were several vehicles that drove by the altercation on Horse Lake Road around 6:40 a.m. Police are asking anyone who witnessed this incident to call the RCMP at 250-395-2456.

Drinking driver

On Sept. 30, police located a red Ford Ranger being operated on Highway 97 at the top of the 99 Mile hill.

The 24-year-old male driver from the Lac la Hache area displayed symptoms having consumed liquor. An approved roadside screening device was administered and the result was a fail.

The driver requested a second test and it was also a fail. The driver met the established criteria and was issued an immediate 90-day driving prohibition. The vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days.

Waiting for driver

On Sept. 28, RCMP received several complaints about a possible impaired driver in the Canim Lake area, and patrols were conducted earlier in the day but the vehicle was not located.

At 6 p.m., another complaint was received about this vehicle, which was near Jones Road off of Canim-Hendrix Lake Road. The vehicle was not being operated at the time.

Police remained in the area and shortly afterwards, the vehicle was observed to be moving. The vehicle was stopped and a female driver was determined to be both impaired and a prohibited driver.

She was detained and taken to the detachment office where two breath samples of 190 mg% were received. Charges of impaired driving and driving over the legal limit are being recommended to Crown against a 40-year-old Williams Lake resident.

She was released with a court date of Nov. 6 in 100 Mile House. The vehicle was towed and impounded.

Drinking driving history

On Sept. 28, 100 Mile Traffic Services and the RCMP responded to a report of a single-vehicle rollover incident on Highway 97 at Stormy Road.

Witnesses at the scene identified the male driver who had lost control of his vehicle in the construction zone and rolled the vehicle several times. He was taken by ambulance to 100 Mile District General Hospital.

The driver displayed symptoms of being impaired by liquor. After the driver was treated, he was released to the custody of the RCMP.

He was returned to the detachment office where he refused to provide a breath sample, and has an extensive history of driving while impaired. He has been charged for driving over the legal limit and driving while impaired in June 2011, May 2012 and July 2012.

Because of the extensive driving history and potential threat to the motoring public, he was held in custody until his court appearance.

Truck stolen

On Sept. 27 at 7 p.m., a 1998 Blue Ford pickup was stolen from in front of Smitty’s Restaurant in 100 Mile House.

The owner of the truck had been inside the restaurant when the vehicle was stolen and the owner’s dog was inside it.

Information was received that a young male from Prince George may have been responsible for the theft, and the information relating to the theft was sent to the RCMP detachments north on Highway 97.

Shortly before 9 p.m., the vehicle was located travelling on Highway 97 at Kersley, south of Quesnel and it pulled into the parking lot of the Alamo Hotel. The male was arrested for theft and possession of stolen property.

Charges of theft and possession of stolen property over $5,000 are being recommended against 26-year-old Vancouver resident who was released from custody with a Court date in Quesnel.

On Sept. 25, 100 Mile Traffic Services located a Ford pickup truck weaving in the southbound lane of Highway 97 near Hill Road.

The vehicle was stopped and the 54-year-old male driver from 70 Mile House displayed symptoms of having consumed liquor. An approved roadside screening device was administered and the result was a fail.

The driver requested a second test, which was also a fail and he was issued a 90-day immediate driving prohibition. His vehicle was towed and impounded for 30 days.
