Crime hotspots in Chilliwack have been identified by the RCMP to alert residents and businesses in those areas.
An RCMP crime analyst identifies the areas of high property crimes to focus police resources, which is released to the public each month by the Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment.
The downtown core, from King Avenue south to Third Avenue and from Broadway west to Main Street saw 17 property crimes May 14-27, police said. There were three stolen vehicles, nine thefts from vehicles and five break-ins.
The second hotspot, from Lickman Road to Yale Road, and south to the malls and the Vedder/Manuel Road area, also saw 17 property crimes May 14-26. There were eight thefts from vehicle and nine business break-ins.
“The common point of entry for the thefts from vehicle are unlocked car doors,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.
Police are reminding the public to always lock vehicle doors, and to never leave anything of value inside a vehicle.
The third hotspot was identified in the Tyson/Watson Park area, including Vedder Road, Miller Drive, Watson Road, Stevenson Road and Wiltshire Street. Six thefts from vehicles were reported May 14-25.
