The city and Regional District of Nanaimo want to get a jump on a pair of projects with the help of government funding.
The RDN is applying for funds through the Gas Tax Transfer Revenue Program for an $8.1-million digester at the Greater Nanaimo Pollution Control Centre on Hammond Bay Road.
The digester, part of the RDN’s 2011-12 capital plan, is a key component to converting the pollution control plant to a secondary treatment centre by 2015.
Meanwhile, the city, in partnership with the RDN, is seeking $400,000 for a regional transportation data model detailing the transit network covering Nanaimo, Lantzville, Cassidy, Cedar, Yellow Point, South Wellington, Gabriola Island, East Wellington and Pleasant Valley.
Criteria for the grant program includes active transportation options, cleaner water or improved wastewater treatment and road improvements.
