Recovery effort ends for apartment blaze

Some of the activities revolving around victims of a Vernon apartment fire are winding down.

With all of the 52 Skyline Manor residents now in temporary or permanent accommodation, the local emergency recovery effort ended Friday.

“Residents who may feel they still require further assistance may contact the Canadian Red Cross at 250-550-0473 to make an appointment,” said Brent Watson, emergency program co-ordinator.

“Residents may also continue to utilize the numerous community resources and provincial agencies that have been made available to them over the past two weeks, and that were available to them before the fire.”

Fire destroyed the 31A Street building Feb. 25.

“The property owner’s insurance provider has contracted a new engineering firm to conduct the structural stability analysis,” said Watson, adding that the Vernon Fire Department will help establish a timeline for the fire investigation.

“Any subsequent re-entry into the building or salvage operations of resident’s possessions will occur after the investigation and after the building has been deemed safe, and will be co-ordinated through the property owner, the property owner’s insurance company, and the restoration company.”

Residents with questions regarding re-entry and salvage should contact the property owner directly.
