Residents urged to help keep roads and sidewalks clear of snow and ice

North Okanagan residents are being asked to do their part to help keep roads clear during snowfall.

Vehicles parked on streets during snowfall pose major obstacles for equipment operators.

“Ensuring that all vehicles are removed from streets, cul-de-sacs and alleys until after the roads are cleared will allow the operators to do a much better and safer job,” said Tanya Laing Gahr, with the City of Vernon.

Residents and businesses are reminded to clear all adjacent sidewalks and to sand and salt where necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians.

“Ensure that all snow from sidewalks and driveways is plowed to front and side yards and not on to or across roadways,” said Laing Gahr.

“Snow plowed onto roadways reduces road snow storage areas and creates a hazard for motorists.”

Residents and businesses adjacent to sidewalk crosswalks are also reminded to clear snow debris left at the front of the wheelchair ramps to allow for pedestrian access.
