Rookie cop clips corn caper

Eager young RCMP officer takes down robbery suspect on his way to work Sunday at Chilliwack detachment.

CHILLIWACK – An off-duty RCMP officer stopped a corn caper in progress Sunday at one of the sales huts located in a parking lot at Vedder Road and Knight Road.

The officer on his way to work at about 4:35 p.m. saw a man ride his bike up to the corn hut, and begin struggling with the young woman behind the counter.

“The officer, who does not wish to be identified, quickly pulled his vehicle into the parking lot,” RCMP Const. Tracy Wolbeck said.

“The suspect got on his bike and began riding away,” she added, but not fast enough as the off-duty officer apprehended him and held him until uniformed officers arrived.

The suspect, 25-year-old Sean Gordon, of Chilliwack, was taken into police custody and charged with robbery.

The off-duty officer has been a member of the Chilliwack RCMP detachment for two years.

“As police officers, we never really shut off,” Wolbeck said. “This young member recognized immediately that something was wrong, and did not think twice about engaging that situation.”
