Rossland asking for merchants to avoid winter salting

The City of Rossland is asking people not to use salts or salt-related products on the new downtown sidewalks this winter.

The City of Rossland is asking people not to use salts or salt-related products on the new downtown sidewalks this winter.

The reason behind this is that the concrete is not yet fully cured and will need up to a year for that to happen. City staff said that at the moment, any application of de-icing salt will break down and damage the new concrete and lead to surface spalding.

Because slipping is s major concern, the city will be applying sand on the sidewalks as winter falls upon us. Buckets of sand will also be made available for downtown merchants to use on the sidewalks around their stores.

The main affected area will be Columbia Avenue, from Spokane Street to the St-Paul intersection, and on Washington Street up to the First Avenue intersection.

If you have any questions call the City at 250-362-2328.
