There will be increased security at Nanaimo District Secondary School and the Nanaimo school district administration office on Wakesiah Avenue due to a possible threat.
Security guards will be outside the high school and the administration office today (Feb. 28) and Monday as the school district works with Nanaimo RCMP to evaluate the situation on a day-to-day basis.
“Two employees in the district have been the subject of some concerning communications from one specific individual in the community. Although neither worksite has been the focus of this ongoing situation, the district will be providing security outside of NDSS and the district administration centre, and maintaining regular contact with the RCMP as an additional safety measure,” according to a statement released by the school district.
According to district spokeswoman Donna Reimer, no direct threats were made to the high school or the administration building and threats were not made by a student. The move is precautionary, she said.
“These types of situations do arise from time to time,” Reimer said. “In almost every case, nothing will happen, but we want to err on the side of caution until we are assured the situation is resolved.”
No other schools will be affected.
