About 250 people lined up today (Thursday) waiting to enter the new H&M clothing store at the new Highstreet shopping complex in Abbotsford.

Shoppers began lining up before 9 a.m. and, by 11:45 a.m., a long queue had formed outside the store. Staff members got the crowd revved up by dancing to the pop music that was playing over the mall speakers.

Precisely at noon, the red ribbon was cut to herald the opening, and eager shoppers streamed through the doors.

H&M (Hennes & Mauritz), one of the world’s largest fashion retailers, announced in April that it would open this fall at the shopping centre at Mt. Lehman Road and Highway 1.

The Abbotsford store is among 2,800 H&M stores worldwide in 49 markets, and the 63rd location in Canada.

The Swedish clothing company is known for its high-fashion looks at affordable prices for men, women, teens and children.

H&M joins several other tenants – including Walmart Supercentre, London Drugs, Old Navy, Cineplex and Marshalls – which have opened at Highstreet.

The complex will contain more than 90 shops and restaurants in total. The complete list can be found at the website highstreetfv.com.
