Local skaters are getting ready to grind the rails and pull off some sweet ollies, flip tricks and more at the second annual Summer Jam 2012.
Taking place at Vernon’s Polson skatepark on Thursday, the all-ages skateboard jam and barbecue is presented by West49 in the Village Green Centre and Fulcrum Skate as a way to kick off the summer skate season.
“This is the longest day of summer, and is the international skateboarding community’s official kickoff date,” said West49 manager Jared Nelson.
The event will feature a best trick contest in three different skill groups.
“The contest will be a jam format, which equates to more door prizes for more kids, a level competition field, and more chances to land more awesome tricks,” said Nelson.
Cold drinks and hot dogs will be sold for $1 each, with proceeds going to KidSport.
“The whole reason for this event is to empower local skaters to make a difference in their communities by celebrating their individual talents and abilities,” said Nelson, adding he would like to see the jam continue as an annual event.
“There is a lot of skateboard talent and some amazing terrain in the Okanagan, and this event brings forward an opportunity to learn and appreciate more about skateboarding and our local talent.”
Thursday’s summer jam takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. More information is available at West49 or Fulcrum Skate, or call 250-542-5433.
