Ski co-op gathers in donations

In the last few weeks, the total has amounted to more than $65,000

THE PRINCE Rupert Port Authority has presented a $50,000 cheque to My Mountain Co-op in support of its operations at the Shames Mountain ski facility.

The presentation was made this afternoon at the mountain by port authority official Ken Veldman.

“My Mountain Co-op has accomplished an extraordinary task in taking over the ownership and operations of the ski area to the benefit of the entire region,” Veldman said.

The donation comes from authority profits and is part of a program that benefits activities and organizations around the region.

“Shames Mountain is an invaluable asset for a widespread community contributing significantly to the region’s livability,” said Veldman. “We know the success of the Port of Prince Rupert—and the communities along our trade corridor—depends on our ability to attract and retain talented and hardworking people. By enhancing quality of life, Shames is a magnet for those who want a part of BC’s growing economy and outstanding recreational opportunities.”

Earlier this week My Mountain Co-op was presented a $10,500 cheque from Terrace-based environmental consulting firm Cambria Gordon.

And two weeks ago, the new owners of Skeena Sawmills presented the co-op with a cheque for $5,000 and a commitment to provide an additional $5,000 in 2013.

The port authority’s $50,000 donation will support the purchase of a new grooming machine for the mountain’s downhill runs and other capital expenditures.
