Skiers lost on Grey Mountain backside found Friday

Two teenage skiers from Washington that went missing on Jan. 2 were found safe on Friday by Rossland Search and Rescue.

Two overdue skiers that went missing on Thursday, Jan. 2 on the backside of Grey Mountain were found safe on Friday.

On Jan. 2 shortly after 4 p.m. Red Mountain Resort reported two overdue skiers that had not reported in. The pair, both age 16, were part of a Boy Scout troop from the state of Washington that were visiting the resort for in-bound skiing.

Rossland Search and Rescue were activated and subsequently located tracks, thought to belong to the missing pair, on the backside of Grey Mountain—a new 405-hectare ski area that opened this season—heading into the Esling Creek basin.

Search and rescue continued the search Friday using snowmobiles, skiers and a helicopter to assist in the search, said RCMP Cpl. Devon Reid of the Trail and Greater District Detachment.

“Search and Rescue located the missing skiers in an area west of Red Mountain resort just after 10 a.m. (Friday),” he said.

The missing skiers were flown down the mountain by helicopter to the Red Mountain Resort area where they were checked over by paramedics just after 11 am.

The skiers were not injured as a result of the ordeal.

Another group of 10 skiers from Washington state spent a cold night on Grey Mountain last week after inadvertently venturing into the backcountry.
