The success of one company’s move shows the Township of Spallumcheen is open for business.
Great West Equipment moved its Vernon operation to the township in 2016, opening a brand new facility built north of Swan Lake off Highway 97A.
“Great West Equipment is a great success story,” said Spallumcheen Mayor Janice Brown.
“Spallumcheen will continue to focus on services like water, sewer and long-term planning for the south Spallumcheen industrial lands (where Great West is situated).
“Our focus is to increase our tax base with industrial to lessen the burden on all residents in Spallumcheen.”
The township would like to lessen the water drinking advisory for one of its water districts.
Steele Springs has been under a water advisory for nearly three years due to high nitrate levels in the water.
“We continue to lobby the Ministry of Environment to find the source of pollution in Steele Springs water and, once identified, try to find solutions to help water users to have safe drinking water again,” said Brown.
The upcoming year will be one of continued hard work, but with some fun and celebration added. It’s not only Canada’s 150th birthday but also the township’s 120th birthday.
“We are ready to head into 2017 and celebrate 125 years,” said Brown as council plans to celebrate with the community.
“The goal is to include as many non-profit organizations to help out financially, showcase Spallumcheen and celebrate and have some fun working together.”
The new year will see Brown entering her third year of her second term as township mayor.
“These two years have gone fast. It’s a busy job but I am honoured,” she said.
