One man is in custody following a stabbing incident in Spallumcheen.
Police were alerted to the stabbing that took place at a home in the 1400 block of McLeod Road at 1:15 a.m. Friday.
“The victim, a 36-year-old Armstrong man, had earlier asked a homeless man if he wanted to come back to his house for a hot shower, a meal and a warm bed for the night,” said Vernon-North Okanagan RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.
“During the evening they had consumed some alcohol. Later in the night, when he refused to go to bed the man was told to leave the house. He refused to leave so he was then escorted from the home as he would not cooperate.”
It is when the pair were at the gate at the end of the driveway that it is alleged the homeless man turned and stabbed the host in the stomach with a knife.
A call was placed to 911 and officers responded to the report of the stabbing, along with a police service dog unit, but they were unable to locate the suspect in the area.
At about 7:15 a.m. Friday, an officer was travelling along Highway 97A and noticed a man matching the description of the suspect walking southbound from the McLeod subdivision toward Armstrong. He was arrested.
The 59-year-old suspect, a resident of the North Okanagan, was expected in Vernon Provincial Court Monday to face a charge of aggravated assault.
The victim remains in hospital recovering from his injuries.
