Suspicious New Year’s Day fire doused downtown

Firefighters from two Chilliwack firehalls were called to knock down flames from the deck of a boarded-up house

It looks like a fire was deliberately set on New Year’s Day behind a vacant house on College Street in downtown Chilliwack.

It was knocked down quickly and no one was hurt. But they’re looking for withnesses.

Firefighters from two local firehalls responded to a structure fire in a boarded up single-storey house in the 9000 block of College St. It was called in at about 9:20 a.m.

Crews found flames and smoke coming from the back deck upon arrival.

“Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire which restricted structural damage to the rear deck and exterior siding,” said assistant fire chief Mike Bourdon of the Chilliwack Fire Department.

The New Year’s Day fire appears to be deliberately set and is under investigation by Chilliwack Fire Department.
