Vernon teachers are protesting Victoria’s plans to challenge a court ruling.
The provincial government is appealing a B.C. Supreme Court ruling that it violated the B.C. Teachers Federation’s bargaining rights related to class sizes.
“Teachers are frustrated and disappointed,” said Heather Malcolm, Vernon Teachers Association president.
“We were hopeful this government would do the right thing which is to restore our smaller classes, rehire our specialist teachers rather than wasting more taxpayers money on a meaningless and costly appeal.”
Three judges of the B.C. Court of Appeal will deliver their ruling possibly by late fall 2014.
“Our interest is in teachers being able to give the best service possible to our students.” said Malcolm.
“If our provincial government shared these concerns, they wouldn’t be appealing Justice Griffin’s ruling. She has ruled on this twice, it is difficult to understand why a third ruling is necessary.”
