Terrace municipal candidate passes away

Don Dunster ran for council this November and for mayor in 2011

Don Dunster, an unsuccessful candidate for Terrace city council in the November municipal elections, died Dec. 5 at Mills Memorial Hospital.

Dunster, 74, had been living in a second-hand motorhome with a small dog as a companion and the pair of them could often be seen walking along the millennium trail.

He parked his motorhome at night at various locations around the city and it could most often been seen at the former Co-op location during the day.

Dunster ran last of the 12 candidates, who ran for the six Terrace council seats in the November municipal elections.

At the Nov. 5 all-candidates meeting, Dunster drew some of the loudest applause of the evening when during a discussion on campaign methods.

“Your home is your castle and I won’t be invading it for me,” he said about knocking on doors.

A bookkeeper by trade, Dunster, a 41-year resident of Terrace, was an admitted alcoholic who had been dry for close to 13 years.

“I haven’t had a drink in 10 years,” Dunster said in a 2011 profile written about him when he ran, also unsuccessfully, for mayor that year. “I’m not ashamed of it, I’m proud of where I am today.”

During his working career, Dunster was a bookkeeper for logging companies and other businesses in the area.

For a time he was also a member of the health council, which ran Mills Memorial Hospital, a body that ceased to exist when a regional health authority took over.
