Saanich police are sending out a warning to anyone seeking private home care after eight incidents of theft from elderly victims, all suffering from poor health or dementia.
The five-month investigation began in January when an elderly woman reported $450 stolen from her home. The woman’s private home-care worker, a 44-year-old Saanich woman was interviewed for her connection to seven other similar instances of theft from the elderly, but without sufficient evidence, no charges have been laid.
Police are warning those in need of care, or their family members to prevent theft by hiring home care through a reputable organization and removing valuables from the home.
For those who choose to pay for private care, police suggest verifying the worker’s identity; having them fill out forms to collect their personal data; requesting a criminal record check from the police; and conducting Internet research on the person.
