An elderly couple living on Highway 23 in Nakusp were woken up during a mid-day nap by someone breaking into their home and rummaging through their belongings.
The would-be thieves fled from the house when one of the owners woke up and saw the suspect.
“Whoever went inside thought no one was home,” said Constable Shaun Foley of the Nakusp RCMP, who also noted the doors to the home were left unlocked.
Although apparently an isolated case, Foley recommends that people keep their doors locked.
The RCMP are keeping the identity of the couple who experienced the break in confidential.
“When you’re in a bigger community, it’s not so sensitive,” Foley commented, whereas in smaller centres like Nakusp, anonymity is key to people’s sense of safety.
