A traffic infraction resulted in a drug bust for Vernon RCMP officers Friday.
Just before 3 a.m., an officer on a routine patrol in the city pulled over an older model Chevrolet Cavalier on Silver Star Road near East Dedecker Road.
The vehicle had been observed by the officer speeding, and the driver failed to signal when making a turn.
“As our officer approached the vehicle, a smell of marijuana was immediately noticed by the officer,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.
The driver and passenger were arrested for possession of marijuana.
During the investigation, the police officer located 12 individually wrapped packages of suspected cocaine and $340 in cash on the passenger, who also had two cell phones and a small amount of marijuana.
The passenger, 18, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and transported back to Vernon cells.
He is expected to face drug-related charges at a later date.
The driver, 26, was issued a violation ticket for failing to signal on a turn and allowed to carry on.
