Truck crash claims Chilliwack woman

Chilliwack RCMP continue searching for additional victims after truck plunges into Fraser River

A Chilliwack RCMP dive team is searching the Fraser River after a Ford F150 truck was pulled from the water after it smashed through a concrete barrier at McDonald Road and Ballam Road late Sunday night.

A 36-year-old woman has already been pronounced dead at the scene. Police are now looking to see if anyone was with her when the truck went into the river.

The incident occurred just before midnight. When police arrived they found a concrete barrier pushed over and a power pole sheared off. They quickly determined that a vehicle had gone into the river and after a brief search located the female.

The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team was called out to the scene and remain on the scene to look for any further victims that may have been in the vehicle.

“This was very tragic,” said Cst. Tracy Wolbeck.  “We are doing everything we can right now to look for any other possible victims.  These searches can be very difficult emotionally on emergency workers and we are very hopeful that there are no further victims involved.”

The pulled from the river Monday morning and the name of the victim will not be released until the investigation is concluded.
