The school board has been working through a process to fill the position of superintendent.
Given the timing of the original vacancy of the position, the first step identified was to temporarily fill the position with an acting superintendent and Mark Wintjes is currently filling this role.
The second step identified was to fill the position with an interim superintendent for the balance of the 2016/17 school year.
Trustees considered a pool of external candidates for the interim position, with the intent that the successful candidate would assist the board in the hiring of a permanent superintendent to begin in August 2017, says school board chair Tanya Guenther.
After considering the availability of its pool of external candidates for the position of interim superintendent, trustees passed a motion to cease the recruitment process for an interim superintendent. To ensure there are no conflicts of interest for potential candidates, the board will manage the recruitment process for the permanent position, she adds.
Wintjes will continue in the role of acting superintendent for the remainder of the 2016/17 school year.
“Having Mr. Wintjes continue in the role of acting superintendent will provide continuity and stability for our school district for the remainder of the school year,” Guenther explains.
“The board will now shift its focus to the recruitment of a permanent superintendent for the next school year.”
Trustees endorsed a tentative timeline for the recruitment process and will begin developing its criteria for the position at its next meeting in December. Stakeholder input will begin in January 2017.
“The board anticipates the announcement of our new superintendent to be in early May 2017 [with the position to commence on Aug. 1]. In the meantime, the board wishes Mr. Wintjes great success in his position.”
