Two hurt after being run over during altercation

NANAIMO – Police arrest and charge 19-year-old female driver

Two pedestrians were injured Monday evening after a vehicle, driven by a 19-year-old female, drove over them, according to Nanaimo RCMP.

At about 6:30 p.m. numerous 911 calls were received regarding an accident involving several pedestrians. When Nanaimo Fire Rescue, along with B.C. paramedics, arrived, they found a 19-year-old female had suffered numerous scratches and burns while a 40-year-old female appeared to have internal injuries and possible broken bones.

Both were transported to Nanaimo Regional General Hospital.

A police investigation revealed than an altercation broke out between two groups near Wellesley Avenue and 106th Street. During the skirmish, police say witnesses allege one of the participants got into a Chevy Blazer and struck two people in the opposing group.

The driver was then pointed out to police and arrested for dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

Officers are following up on information received at the scene that the driver may have been encouraged to drive her vehicle at the two injured persons,” said Const. Gary O’brien, spokesman for the Nanaimo RCMP.

The vehicle was towed to Mid-Island Towing for a mechanical inspection and an RCMP traffic analyst was on scene for several hours.

The driver was released on a promise to appear in court on two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing bodily harm. Her first court date is set for Aug. 13.

Police are asking if anybody has information relating to this incident to contact Const. Ben Lanthier of the Nanaimo RCMP at 250-754-2345, or Crime Stoppers at 1-877-222-8477 or online at www.crimestoppers.com.
