Three Americans provoked a brief shutdown of the Abbotsford-Huntingdon border crossing when they tried to bring an inert grenade into Canada.
The trio was planning to drive to Alaska through B.C.
They were arrested Thursday afternoon after a routine secondary search by Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officers discovered the device among their posessions.
The Abbotsford police and RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit (EDU) were called in.
Traffic was shut down for a short period of time, then restricted to
a single lane in either direction until the device was declared inert by the EDU.
Abbotsford Police Staff Sgt. Rick Stewart posted a photo of the grenade Thursday evening on Twitter.
“Cutting through B.C.? Don’t have grenade in plain view,” Stewart wrote. “Closed border & called out EDU. No entry for u.”
The CBSA said the three visitors returned to the United States.
No charges are pending.
