Editor’s note: With updated information regarding severe thunderstorm watch.

There is once again a severe thunderstorm watch, this time for Grand Forks and the West Kootenay.

Environment Canada has issued a high priority bulletin warning of severe thunderstorms with large hail and damaging winds, although as of 2:54 p.m. this afternoon it was listed as low priority.

The potential for severe thunderstorms will last until early this evening, Environment Canada said.

“An unstable airmass combined with a surface trough of low pressure will allow for thunderstorms to develop this afternoon. Some of these thunderstorms could become severe over the above mentioned regions. The main threats from these storms in the arrow lakes and West Kootenay regions are strong winds and large hail. Across the Peace River region the storms are likely to be slow moving. As a result the main threat with the Peace River thunderstorms is heavy downpours with localized rainfall amounts approaching 25mm in one hour,” read the bulletin.

Environment Canada says highs today (July 27) will reach 31 C while lows tonight are forecast for 14 C with a 40 per cent probability of precipitation.

A severe thunderstorm watch for Grand Forks and the Boundary was issued yesterday but ended in the evening.
