Street lights were smashed, portable toilets were tipped over and sprinkler heads were kicked at Parksville’s Community Park earlier this month, said Debbie Tardiff, the city’s communications officer.
Tardiff said it cost the city approximately $2,500 to fix.
Four of the portable toilets had been tipped over, one of which had to be replaced.
The fences around the currently under-construction washrooms were also knocked over. The pop-up library lost its door and had to be removed as well, Tardiff said.
Tardiff said she was “surprised the damage was by (the) campgrounds.” She thought someone would have heard the noise.
“If people see strange things, call the RCMP,” Tardiff said.
The cameras on the work site had been disconnected over the weekend, Tardiff said, so there is no footage available of the event as it took place.
Oceanside RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman told The NEWS there were no calls made during the evening on June 12 but at least two calls were made in the morning of June 13 at 4:40 a.m.
These calls were about the damages, Foreman said.
Tardiff said she couldn’t believe someone would do this.
“It’s an area for all of us,” Tardiff said. “It’s a family area.”
