A pair of injury motor vehicle crashes Wednesday night were among a series of incidents and calls that kept View Royal firefighters hopping in a 24-hour period.
Two people were taken to hospital after the car in which they were travelling left the road and hit a tree on Highland Road at Riverside Drive just before 10:30 p.m. West Shore RCMP also attended the crash and are investigating.
Earlier in the evening, at around 6:20 p.m., crew responded to a vehicle rollover on the Trans Canada Highway under the Helmcken Road overpass, in which the occupants were reportedly trapped inside. According to Fire Chief Paul Hurst, the occupants were crawling out of the vehicle upon the arrival of emergency crews. RCMP are looking into the cause of this crash as well.
The crashes came after View Royal and Colwood firefighters and paramedics teamed up and used Colwood’s tower ladder truck to pluck an injured worker off the roof of the office building at Eagle Creek Village around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday.
The man was immobile after injuring his back and was unable to be moved down to the ground through the building, as the roof was only accessible by a “ship’s ladder” from the top floor. Emergency personnel loaded the man onto a spine board, placed him in the bucket of the tower ladder and brought him to the ground, where he taken by ambulance to nearby Victoria General Hospital.
On Tuesday night around 10:50 p.m. alarm bells sent fire crews rushing to the Six Mile Pub, where they found smoke lingering inside the pub. No fire was found but it was determined that the kitchen’s exhaust system had failed and allowed smoke to move into the seating area. Crews ventilated the building and reset the alarms.
In between these incidents, crews responded to half dozen or so medical aid calls.
