Victoria man surrenders to police after nearly five-hour standoff

Residents in surrounding buildings evacuated during standoff

The incident began with shots being fired inside an apartment in the 100-block of Gorge Rd. about midnight Friday.

It ended with members of the Emergency Response Team taking a 56-year-old man into custody just before 4:30 a.m. Saturday and transporting him to hospital under the Mental Health Act.

The man, who was alone in the suite during the standoff and was not known to police, had called 911 in an apparent state of emotional distress before firing several shots in the apartment.

The gunfire prompted police to evacuate the building and others nearby as a precaution. Police forensic investigators determined the shots were confined to the man’s suite.

The man was not injured in the incident, nor was anyone else.
