Weather causing work crews to fall behind on bridge work

If you’re beginning to wonder about what’s going on with the new Fraser Highway Nicomekl River crossing — or, more specifically, what’s not going on — you’re not alone.

A number of people have contacted the City of Langley to ask about the recent lack of activity on the bridge building project, City engineer Gary Vlieg told council during Monday night’s televised meeting.

“A lot of the work that is supposed to be happening is weather contingent,” he explained.

Once the weather improves, crews will resume paving work and will raise the last few signal poles, he said.

“We expect a flurry of activity,” Vlieg said.

Because of the cold, wet spring, crews are running up against a tight deadline, with a grand opening celebration planned for Saturday, May 28.

The public is invited to meet at St. Andrew’s United Church, next to the new bridge, beginning at 10 a.m. that day for the official opening of the bridge.

Drivers are advised that Fraser Highway will be completely closed for a two-hour period that morning, as part of the celebration, said Vlieg.
