Tourism Wells Gray is in the process of hiring a consultant to develop a UNESCO Heritage Development Plan.
According to the local tourism organization’s February newsletter, the hiring is being done with the assistance of the District of Clearwater and provincial Community Tourism Opportunity program support coordinated through Thompson Okanagan Tourism (TOTA).
World Heritage Status from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) would mean international recognition of Wells Gray Park and its many natural wonders – not the least of which is its fascinating volcanic history.
In its February newsletter, Tourism Wells Gray notes that many people in the area support this initiative.
Because of the time it would take to achieve UNESCO Heritage Status, the development plan will also look at the possibility of initially seeking UNESCO GeoPark status, which could help in the larger heritage designation. GeoPark status is an initiative launched by UNESCO to recognize sites that are significant for earth sciences.
Tourism Wells Gray notes, “This is an exciting project that will bring extra attention to the extraordinary environment of Wells Gray while protecting the essence that makes our area unique.”
