Work starts on infrastructure upgrades in Parksville

Banks, Forsyth and Doehle avenues are the sites of the work

The city recently awarded the Banks Avenue West and Forsyth Avenue upgrade contract to Hazelwood Construction Services to construct municipal infrastructures upgrades on Banks Avenue West and Forsyth Avenue between Acacia Street and Finholm Street.

The work, which started on June 6, involves the reconstruction of about 200 lineal metres of local roadway on Banks Avenue West, including the replacement of the water main and the installation of storm sewer, streetlights, sidewalks and other related improvements between Acacia Street and Finholm Street and the replacement of the water main and installation of storm sewer and services with asphalt overlay on Forsyth Avenue between Acacia Street and Finholm Street and other related improvements within the project area.

The proposed underground work on both streets will involve replacing the existing asbestos cement water main and water services, as well as the installation of new storm drainage mains and house services. The existing road surface on Banks Avenue West will be reconstructed and upgraded to a local standard, including concrete curb and gutter, sidewalks and street lights. The existing road surface on Forsyth Avenue will be realigned to the centre of the right-of-way and capped with an asphalt overlay.

The contractor will complete the works on Forsyth Avenue before moving to Banks Avenue West, expected to be mid-July. Construction should be substantially complete by the end of September.

The city said there will be some inconveniences and it appreciates the co-operation and patience of residents during these periods. Traffic will be open to local residents and emergency vehicles. Temporary road closures and interruption to water service may occur in order to perform necessary work. In the event of a planned shutdown of the water service, the contractor will notify local residents a minimum of 48 hours prior to such work.

Questions or concerns should be addressed to the city’s engineering department at

• The city also wants to advise residents of upcoming road works on Doehle Avenue between Pym Street and Allwood Road, which started on Monday. Doehle Avenue will be under construction and still open for local traffic from about 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. through Friday.

Should residents need to get vehicles out during this time, please make arrangements to do so prior to 7 a.m. Foot traffic in and out will be accommodated.
