Ms. Westrom, a renter, is requesting council to ban beach fires in front of residences between hidden harbour and the big rock.
My family have enjoyed beach fires in front of our beach front properties for almost 50 years. Many years were amidst considerably more beach wood than we have today.
Every fire was fully extinguished with a garden hose and built below the high water line. Over the past 10 months, walking the beach walk south of the Big Rock (public beach front), I have extinguished two smoldering fires from the nite previous.
What is required is not a bylaw to be attended to by over subscribed law enforcement; rather, an educational campaign by our local fire department of the need to build beach fires below the high water mark (have the high tide help); or at minimum ensure all fires are fully extinguished at the end of the evening. Common sense.
Enjoy the fires!
