HEROES AND ZEROS

Many thanks for a renovation job extremely well done

HEROES – Many thanks for a renovation job extremely well done by Matt Ellis and his Rimfire Construction crew. Matt was never too busy to answer our many questions, despite having to put up with a very “high maintenance customer,” and always came through with ideas, opinions and suggestions that exceeded our expectations. The work was completed as scheduled and the service provided was above and beyond what we expected from a general contractor.  Campbell River and surrounding communities are, in our opinion, very fortunate to have Matt and the Rimfire crew available to work for you. Herb and Rene Chambers, Squamish, B.C.

HEROES – I would like to a send a huge thank you too a number of heroes. Jim, Bob, Lorie, and two awesome ladies who helped me and my boys after I fell off my bike on Hilchey road. The ladies, whose names I forget, were so good with me and my boys. Thank you very much. Jim, who came shortly after with his 3rd level first-aid was great also. Thank you again. I will never forget you all. My boys are awesome boys, and I am very lucky to have such great boys. Thank you for site-seeing. I was not wearing a helmet, which is not smart, and I am very lucky to have only 3 stitches in my head and a scrape on my elbow. Please reply to this ladies, so that I know that you know how important you are to me…Thank you again! – Super mom… Not!

HEROES – On behalf of the Campbell River Senior’s Centre Society we would like to advise the community of some of our heroes over the last couple months.   Save on Foods, you are the bread winners. Thank-you to Bob’s Flooring for our new and polished floor, and Andy Adams from the Campbell River Rotary who presented  us with a cheque of $2,500.00. What a great place we live in. Thank-you all for your support. – Campbell River Senior’s Centre Society

Thank you to Rona for your yearly discount on our paint. We thank our volunteers that have helped with the project. Thanks to the Southgate students for their help in repairing our ancient wooden stretchers. Merci to Barry Kegler and his staff from SD72 for moving the stretchers from school to school. We thank Don Kretlow for helping to organize some of the stretchers. The Arts Council appreciates the participation of the students and staff of Cedar, Discovery Passage, Ecole des Deux Mondes, Ecole Willow Point, Ripple Rock, and Sandowne, who are creating banners to represent the animals and activities of Strathcona Park. The 100th Anniversary of Strathcona Park is the theme for the 2011 Banner Project. – The Campbell River Arts Council

HEROES – I’d like to thank the great young musicians and the students of the Tara School of Irish Dancing for performing at the Fine Arts Benefit Concert for Japan, on May 7th at the Campbell River Baptist Church. Your performances were the first class. I am sure the people of Japan will enjoy your performance as much as we did, as we will send this DVD to Japan. Thank you to the Honourable Charlie Cornfield, Mayor of Campbell River for your address to our audience. It was a moving speech. Thank you to the audience for coming to our concert and donating money to the Canadian Red Cross. We are a small group of Japanese and Nikkei people living in Campbell River, the Comox Valley, and surrounding areas. Without the great support of the Campbell River Baptist Church, we could not have had a concert at all. To Pastor Randy Evans, thank you for your kind generosity. Thank you to Chris Coon for guiding and helping us to organize the concert, to Chris Coon and Aaron Clausen for the sound system, to Jon Kornelsenj and June Spelay for designing and printing the posters, and to Gibson Bellosillo for taking the video of the performance for Japan. Thank you to Tim Horton for donating Timbits for our performers. We appreciate the Campbell River Mirror and the Campbell River Courier-Islander for running an article about this event. Finally, last but not least, I’d like to thank Miyuki for pursuing the dream of having a benefit concert for Japanese earthquake and tsunami victims.  A thank you also goes to Yuka for making the great video about the Japan earthquake and tsunami which was shown at the concert. Over $1400 was raised for the Canadian Red Cross Japan Earthquake and Asia Pacific Tsunami Response. Thank you for your generosity! – Mitzi & Miyuki, Japanese and Nikkei Community of Campbell River, Comox Valley, and Area

ZEROES – I have walked in Dick Murphy Park since it opened and have loved it; the people I have met, their pets and kids, and just the general atmosphere. I got a dog myself a year ago and have had a wonderful time bringing her there to meet and play with other dogs and their owners. Unfortunately now, I find I do not want to go there anymore because of the amount of dog feces left on the grass and paths, despite their being poop bags provided. Come on Campbell River we are better than this.

HEROES – We would like to give a big thank you to all of the professionals at Ocean Grove Midwifery and the Campbell River Hospital maternity ward that helped bring our daughter Gabrielle Rose into the world on March 02.  A special acknowledgement to Teralee, Sheila, and Yarrow, along with Dr.Duckitt and nurses Maureen, Kathy, and Lea, among everybody else. You were all amazing, especially given the shortage of staff and workloads you faced. – Proud Parents Mike and Tara

HEROES – The staff at the Campbell River Hospice Society would like to send out a thank you to the team at the Scotiabank, because they thought of the Hospice Society when wanting to donate recent proceeds from their ongoing book sale. With their generous donation of $2000 we are able to continue to provide end-of-life support, grief counseling, and support groups to all members of our community and the surrounding area free of charge. Thank you so very much Scotiabank for your support.

HEROES – Could we please send a BraveHearts Dragon Boat full of beautiful roses to Coril Air, for the gracious use of their dock for our Open Boat on April 23, Saturday, and the generous donation of sight-seeing flight tickets for our upcoming fundraiser. We had great weather and a good time was had by all. Also, thanks to Starbucks at Mariner who kindly provided coffee for us. – BraveHearts Dragon Boat Team, Campbell River

HEROES – The students, teachers, and PAC at Discovery Passage Elementary would like to send a carnival full of roses to the parents, extended family members, local businesses, and friends who donated their time, baked goods, and gifts for the raffle and support. A special thanks to the students and teachers who dedicated a lot of time in creating their stations, and setting a great example to the younger children about what team work is all about. The carnival was a great success and raised just over $2,000. Contributing to the event were Zellers, A&W, Dairy Queen, Mc Donald’s, Fusilli Grill, Bounce-A-Rama, C R Storm, Crystal Lanes, Eden Street Spa, Wendy’s, 99.7 The River, Campbell River Mirror, and Glen’s Kettle Korn. Thank you from the PAC Committee, Students, Parents and Staff at Discovery Passage Elementary School! – Ashley Belanko, Discovery School PAC Committee

ZEROES – This is to all those ignorant dazed out drivers who don’t take the time to scan over and see that there is someone waiting at a crosswalk. Every morning I walk my dogs and have to cross Alder. I walk at a busy time in the morning, and I understand that. But I have had way too many people just look at me while I’m standing there clearly waiting to cross, and they continue driving. What the heck! I was hit by a car back in 2006 on Alder crossing to Rockland School. I almost made it across the street before I was struck by a car. Luckily I only had to get knee surgery and my dog was ok. I would never wish that upon anyone. But my point is, I fear that there are too many dazed drivers not paying attention to pedestrians crossing the street on clearly marked crosswalks. I have had enough of having a fear of getting struck again by these, lets say “ignorant drivers.” Let’s not forget the cell phone drivers not paying attention either. I hope a few of you read this, and stop for us patient pedestrians. Thank you.

HEROES – Thirty two dozen long stemmed roses to Klari Varallyai, Jen Fyfe and staff at Campbell River Physiotherapy for 32 years of dedicated service and friendship to all those who came through your doors for help. Campbell River would be a darker place without you. Klari helped me “see the light” and I’ve never looked back. – Sandy McAuliffe

HEROES – We at Evergreen Seniors Home have a great Activities Director named Shelly. She has done wonders for our residents and they all love her. She goes way above and beyond her job title, and I know we don’t thank her enough for all the work she does. So Shelly, you are the greatest and we all appreciate all your hard work and dedication. Thanks. – Residents and Staff at ESH

HEROES – Chas Maria Star Charitable Society, Order of the Eastern Star, send a huge thank you to Lynn, Don, and crew of Gulf Pacific Property Management for their tremendous support of our used book sale held at the Tyee Plaza in April. Also, our very sincere thanks to All-In-One Party Rentals for your exceptional help in setting up the tables. All of your help made our book sale a huge success. The residents of Campbell River have been very supportive of our fundraisers for cancer for which we are truly grateful. Thank you, Campbell River!

HEROES – I was in a car accident January 20 just outside of Sayward. Accidents are normally traumatic events, but this mishap ended up being a life-affirming and positive experience due to the kindness and generosity of strangers. Thank you to Kenny Schmidt for stopping within a few minutes of my accident, helping get myself and my dog out of the van, and then giving us a ride into Campbell River to the insurance office. Thank you to the wonderful ladies at Vancouver Island Insurance, (especially Kamilla), for guiding me when my mind was muddled, and for allowing me to bring my dog into your office on that wintry day and offering me some Tylenol and a warm beverage. Thank you to the BC Ferry employees at Departure Bay for helping me get my skittish dog onto the ferry and steering me into the heated waiting room. Thank you to Archie at Sayward Towing for taking such good care of my vehicle and for giving me great advice. Thank you to Cameron and Jerry at ICBC for all your help, and prompt, courteous service. Thank you to Mark at the Safety Centre for helping me with the process of inspecting and re-registering my vehicle with ICBC. Thank you to Darren, his brother and the mechanic at the Muffler Shop for fixing my vehicle, staying open late on Saturday so I could pick it up, offering to pick me up at the bus top, and giving me a ride to and from the insurance office. Thank you to Monty at Island Link for going out of your way for me. Thank you to the staff at Hub Insurance for expediting the process of registering and insuring my vehicle again. And finally, thank you to the owner of the Dairy Queen in Parksville for kindly printing me out a BC Ferry schedule. Now you can understand why it was such an amazing experience for me. May there always be a stranger to help you when you are in need. – Barb Weston, Sechelt, BC

HEROES – The Campbell River Women’s Centre wants to extend floral tributes to several of the outstanding volunteers that worked so hard to make our 4th Annual Celebrating Women, art show and gala such a success: a garland of perfect pink roses to the extraordinary culinary talents of Kathy Davies, sheaths of red beauty roses to Diane Desmarais and Frances Lake, divas of the silent auction table, and a basket of delicate wild roses to Ellen Latta, in appreciation of her artistic talents and endless energy. In addition, roses of all hues to Chris and Brooke, of Impressions, for so graciously and generously coming to our recue. Thank you all.

HEROES – A big heartfelt thank you to Poppy Steele for her great work, and donation to the Campbell River and North Island Transition Society.

HEROES – An Inland Highway full of rose bouquets to the four RCMP officers who attended to our motor vehicle accident on Wednesday April 20 at about 3:30 p.m., just north of the Dove Creek Road turnoff. And also to the car of three ladies, and to the V.I.P. truck driver. To the RCMP officers: you showed us great compassion and empathy. You let us sit in your car to stay warm and dry, and Officer Draper, you really made us feel better with your quick wit and sense of humour. The first two officers just happened to be driving by during the course of their workday but stayed with us until the Highway Traffic officers were free and able to attend. To the V.I.P. truck driver: thank you so much for stopping and making sure we were both okay. You even offered to stay with us until help arrived which was most kind of you. To the three ladies in the car: you too, stopped for us to make sure we were okay and offered us the use of your cell phone and an umbrella during that “freak” hail and sleet storm. I cannot tell you enough what your kindness and generosity meant to us. During that whole time of mass confusion, I failed to get anyone’s names, (other than Draper’s because it was on the accident report), and for that I do apologize. I trust that all of you will see this and read it, and that you know who you are. Thank you very, very much to each of you. We shall be eternally grateful to all of you. Hopefully one day our paths will cross again, but under better circumstances, so we can thank each of you properly. – Gary and Barbara Hessler
