Hazel Beech is a remarkable woman who has gone beyond the normal responsibilities of a citizen when it comes to civic duty. She has committed her time and energy toward the progression and improvement of our Town.
When Hazel’s name was brought forward to recognize her invaluable contribution to our community, there was no hesitation in supporting her appointment as freeman of the town.
This is a most deserving distinction and we congratulate Hazel.
Hazel spent many years as an elected official and presently sits as a member of the town’s Advisory Planning Commission and is an active member of the Rate Payers Association.
Recently, the Honeymoon Bay Community Society recognized the Royal Wedding by hosting High Tea at the community hall, which was full to capacity, with everyone getting into the spirit of the well organized event.
An enjoyable afternoon was had by all.
This past weekend’s Heritage Days best exemplified how a dedicated group can share and showcase their passion.
Pat Weaver, Lake Cowichan Heritage Commission Chair and Pat Foster, President of Kaatza Historical Society and their committees organized the events. With increasing attendance year over year, many people enjoyed numerous events over the long weekend. Our rich history was showcased in numerous activities and it was nice to see so much participation.
Our rich history was well illustrated at the IWA 1-80 Archives Display opening celebration. The Wilmer Gold collection of photographs will be displayed at our museum for all to admire.
Al Lundgren and Barbara Simkins have done an outstanding job of putting together a wonderful program. The IWA history at Cowichan Lake is something that should never be forgotten and I was proud to have been asked to take part the grand opening, as a representative of our town.
On Saturday, May 28, town council had a team participating in a 12-hour relay for cancer. The Relay for Life Cancer Walk is from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in support of all affected by the disease.

With the weather becoming a bit more co-operative, our Public Works department has started work on capital projects.
We know this can be a bit of a nuisance for some, but it is essential if improvements to our town are to be made. Thank you for your understanding as we make progress.
