Preparing for a bumpy ride

Dawn Potvin, It Dawned on Me

There always seems to be a need for some sort of a trade off.  With all the continuous complaining about our seemingly endless winter, we have finally reached something that resembles Spring.

Instead of shovelling until our shoulders are begging for mercy, it’s now time to sweep the driveway and rake what will soon be grass.

Here’s where the trade off comes in.

I don’t know if I’m the only one that has noticed – which I doubt – but I hit a pothole the other day that not only almost sprang my studded tires right off my car, but completely (and truly) knocked my car out of gear from drive to neutral.

I guess I should be happy that it didn’t knock it all the way into reverse, as I would still be fishing my transmission out from the bottom of that hole in the ground.

I’ve noticed that there are frost heaves in town that have the capability of launching your vehicle up in the air – which at times can feel cool, unless it’s 8:45 and your plowing your way to the school parking lot.

The enormous potholes scattered around town are the likes of which I have never seen.

I try to straddle my little car’s tires on either side of it and slow to an almost stop, but every single day at least once I rock my car until I can actually hear nuts and bolts from the undercarriage hitting the pavement.

And anyone who truly knows me knows my ah, lack of driving prowess – I only hope some readers have never witnessed me trying to back up.

I don’t profess to be a professional driver by any stretch of the imagination, but sometimes these in town road conditions start my day at strike two already.

I know that the powers that be who are responsible for getting out there and patching up these holes are probably already gearing up to get out there and mend, it just cannot come fast enough.

Time for the studded tires to come off, I just don’t want any rubber bumpers to have to be put on.
