Abbotsford’s Sophie Buitendyk added a lead climbing national championship to her growing trophy case over the weekend at the Cascade Escalade Canada in Saanich.
Competing in the Youth B class against 23 other young climbers, Buitendyk finished tied for top spot in the difficulty climbing competition.
The victory was just the latest national crown for the young climber.
Buitendyk, a Grade 9 student who began climbing at the Project Climbing Centre in Abbotsford when she was eight, placed first at the Canadian National Youth Bouldering Championship in Burlington, Ont., in the 14/15-year-old category.
Earlier this month, she was named the B.C. champion in her age category in sport climbing (ropes).
She is also aiming to compete at the International Federation of Sport Climbing World Youth Championships in Acro, Italy, in late August.
